Mongolia 2019

Hello friends,

this page is intended to keep you updated about our trip to Mongolia in August 2019.

We plan to leave on July 27th with an Aeroflot flight to Moscow continuing to Ulaanbaatar, where we will arrive at round about 5’clock in the morning of July 28th.

After freshing up at the guest house of our first tour operator Sunpath Mongolia, some shopping and hopefully good sleep, we will leave on July 29th for a 8 day Jeep/Mini Van group tour to the Terelj Nation Park and Gobi. More detailed information see their corresponding tour web site and their tour google map page.
Over night we will be in basic yurts (also called ger) with (very) limited infrastructure …. As the moon will not shine (New Moon phase) and there is absolutely no light pollution in Gobi, we hope to see a tremendous amount of stars incl. the Milky Way (if there are no clouds ;-))

From late August 5th to early morning August 10 we stay in Ulaanbaatar for freshing up, relax, recharge the mobile, notebook, camera, powerbank etc batteries and sight seeing.

On August 10th, the next phase of our trip starts. A driver will pick us up at the Sunpath guest house and bring us to the Khustai National Park. Khustai is well know for the successful reintroduction of the endemic Przewalski horse (Przewalski) – the only wild horse to survive in modern times.

After a night in family operated ger (yurt) we continue to the Khugnu Khan Natural Reserve (aka Mini Gobi) for hiking and camel riding and the hospitality of a nomadic family.

On August 12th, we continue to Kharakorin (aka Karakorum), which was the center of the Ancient Mongolian Empire. Here we have a chance to shower, recharge etc. at the guest house of our 2nd tour operator, before we leave to next phase of our adventure.

On August 13th, a driver will bring us the a Nomadic family in the Orkhon Valley, where we participate in the life of a local herdsman family for the next 7 days. see their info on Airbnb. Isn’t it interesting & wonderful how small the world became …

On August 19th, a driver will pick us up and bring back to the guest house in Kharakorin, where we stay till our return to Ulaanbaatar on August 25th. During that time we plan to visit/make trips to Erdenezuu Monastery, Kharkhorin Museum, King’s Monument, Shankh MonasteryTuvkhun TempleGokhturk Museum and some local activities.

Early in the morning of August 26th, we return with an Aeroflot flight to Munich via Moscow. Being in Mongolia from July 28th to August 26th, we stay exactly for the maximum allowed time (30 days) without visa.

I’ve added interesting Mongolian locations and our travel plan to a Google map. Just check it out.

Best regards
Fritz

Update on August 31th:

We’re back from our 30 day trip to Mongolia. What a great experience and thousands of impressive pictures.

During the trip, I used the polarsteps mobile app to quickly document our daily experiences together with some mobile phone pictures. See the private link polarsteps.com. Great service, highly recommended.

Now the hard work begins. Sorting/evaluating all the pictures and processing the good ones. This will take us some time. Stay tuned, there’s a lot to see.
